Strongest Earthquake to Hit Taiwan in Decades Leaves at Least Seven Dead

The strongest earthquake to strike Taiwan in more than two decades left at least seven dead and hundreds injured on Wednesday, state media reported, citing data from a local fire department.

The 7.3 magnitude temblor occurred just before 8 a.m. off the coast of Hualien county in eastern Taiwan, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The quake, which generated tremors felt across of a swath of the Chinese mainland on the other side of the Taiwan Strait, had left over 700 people injured in Taiwan as of 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to Hualien County Fire Bureau, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
